Overview

The About Me program supports you to know yourself, share your story and find the right supports.

When you do About Me, you will work with a project officer to explore your strengths, interests, goals and inspirations, as well as the supports and accommodations you might need. We find creative ways to communicate this information with services, employers, or anyone in your life. This could be making a short About Me video, or a ‘podcast’ style video or audio recording.

There are four About Me modules and you can choose to do any that suit you. Each module focuses on a different area of your life – Employment, Education, Healthcare, Disability Support. Your first module takes around 10 weeks of one-hour weekly sessions, and additional modules are quicker.

The outcomes of About Me are personal and different for each person. It frequently contributes to your confidence and motivation, and developing the skills to achieve your goals.

Eligibility

The About Me program is available to:

  • MAIB clients
  • People with a disability living in Tasmania
  • People with a disability in other states and territories, where capacity allows

Modules

Employ Me

Employ Me supports you in your employment, volunteering or further training/education goals.

When you participate in Employ Me, you may wish to explore:

  • what makes you a good employee
  • your personal skills and strengths
  • your interests
  • the types of work you are looking for
  • what supports you might need.

Towards the end of Employ Me, we can connect you with other services and supports that can help you achieve the goals you identify. Your goals are personal, but may include things like finding a part time job, doing further training or volunteering in a particular industry.

Support Me

Do you have support workers or others who assist you with things like daily living, food preparation, shopping or self care?

Support Me can help you communicate with your support team. If you choose to create a Support Me video, you may wish to share it with members of your support team, family members or close friends so that they understand you better. It can be especially useful when you have someone join your support team to help them learn more about you and avoid having to repeat yourself.

During Support Me, you may choose to explore:

  • identifying your strengths
  • the things you need help with
  • how much assistance you need
  • strategies to help you be more independent, if you choose.

Support Me can help your support workers to understand the small but important things in your life.

Educate Me

Are you at school, Tafe or university? Educate Me is all about sharing your learning needs at the place where you learn.

You may choose to explore:

  • how you communicate
  • things you are good at
  • things you need help with
  • strategies to help you learn
  • how to ensure you feel safe and calm in your learning environment.

Knowing this information can be handy for teachers and other staff when helping you. If you have a new teacher or a new teacher aide, Educate Me can help these people quickly learn what they can do to help you learn best.

Healthy Me

Healthy Me is about engaging with your healthcare team.

This may include:

  • sharing your health information once rather than repeating yourself
  • setting health goals
  • being more involved in decision making
  • helping healthcare providers understand how to best support you
  • not having to repeat yourself each time you engage with a new health care provider.

Healthy Me can also help healthcare providers understand what other services you are accessing, which can help everyone work together to support you the best they can.

How was the About Me program developed?

About Me is a project of the Brain Injury Association of Tasmania (BIAT). About Me builds upon the proven outcomes of the Employ Me module, which was developed as part of BIAT’s Employ Me Project. The Employ Me Project has operated since 2021.

Through a process of co-design and thorough consultation, we’ve adapted the Employ Me process and resources to create the new Health, Education and Disability Support modules. The Employ Me Project and BIAT’s earlier Disclosure Project (2019-2020) worked with people living with brain injury across Tasmania, supporting individuals to take control over sharing details of their disabilities and needs, and establishing the process and the resources we still use.

Who are we (about BIAT)?

The Brain Injury Association of Tasmania (BIAT) is a non-government, state-wide, not for profit organisation working for people living with brain injury, their families and other stakeholders.
